A fairly prominent manifestation of this condition is in hoarders’ attachment to products. I noticed a similar trend in Collyer Curiosa and episodes of Hoarders: Buried Alive. Individuals classified as hoarders have an ability to rationalize completely irrational behaviors. They can attach meaning and purpose to seemingly insignificant objects. To the Collyer brothers they “purposefully” allowed they’re house to enter disarray to avoid being robbed by neighbors. In episodes of Hoarders, a porcelain plate would drop or some figurine would be thrown out, and the hoarder would have a fit and explain every reason why that object should not be thrown out.
In their brains there seems to be irrational rationalization, and as in the case of Homer and Langley, isn’t that seemingly paradoxical? Do hoarders live in a world of paradoxes and contradictions? Do they struggle with their attachment to objects, or are they completely oblivious to subconscious processes?
